Student property market remaining strong

The latest Savills World Student Housing Report for 2017 has revealed that mature student housing investment hotspots such as the US and the UK are still holding strong despite all the political uncertainty. In fact, the report states that the student property investment market has become one of the most lucrative asset classes found anywhere in the world.

Despite the ongoing political noise surrounding the Trump presidency and of course, Brexit, the student market in both the US and UK has been remarkably resilient. In the UK, the sector continues to see high levels of investment. Here are a couple of the reasons why:

  • Changing student demands and the requirement for better standard accommodation has seen the rise of PBSA (purpose-built student accommodation). This type of accommodation is far more conducive to studying than traditional HMOs and contain all the amenities that the discerning student needs.
  • Overseas students are particularly drawn to PBSA and the influx of overseas students to both the UK and US continues to grow. With the UK accounting for 10% of the world’s top universities, applications have not dried up because of the Brexit vote. The UK and the US have some of the most renowned universities on the planet and no amount of political uncertainty has dampened the desire of foreign students to get the best education their money (or their parents’ money) can buy.
