International students coming to the UK tops 100,000

Despite fears that Brexit would see big falls in international students coming to the UK, new figures from UCAS show that the numbers of students from EU countries and around the world is now as high as it’s ever been.

Whilst there was certainly a dip in 2017, when applications from EU students fell by 7%, the latest data from UCAS reveals a significant uplift in applications for 2018, not only recovering, but higher than ever before.

According to the figures, around 43,500 EU students applied for places at UK universities this year, which is a 3% upturn on 2017 figures. At the same time, the total numbers of international students coming to these shores as topped 100,000 for the first time.

In response to this new data, CEO of Universities UK, Alistair Jarvis, said: “The increase in international applications shows that the UK remains one of the most attractive destinations in the world for talented, international students.”

This significant uplift in numbers bodes very well for the UK student accommodation market, with a plethora of new student developments now taking place across the country.
