Key Dates that will shape the investment year

2017 is likely to be a momentous year for the investment market and there are some key dates that are coming up over the next couple of months that you need to take note of. These events are likely to have an impact on the performance of your investments and the first one is only a few days away:

  • UK Budget (March 8th) – This will be the last budget before the UK invokes Article 50 and finally starts the formal process of leaving the EU.
  • Dutch general election (March 15th). Hot on the heels of the UK budget is the Netherlands general election. This is going to be a really interesting one to watch. Favourite to win is far-right candidate Geert Wilders who is notoriously anti-EU. Could this spark a Nexit, Dexit or Hexit? (Netherlands, Dutch, Holland…take your choice!)
  • Article 50 (March 30th) – The deadline for UK to trigger Article 50 and so the negotiations begin…
  • French presidential election (April 23rd). Another election to watch very closely and with Marine Le Pen from the far-right riding high in the polls, who is to say what would happen if she gets the vote? Every bit as anti-EU as Geert Wilder, could a Frexit be on the cards?

Each one of these will inevitably hit the investment markets and of course, in the background, we have the ongoing controversies of the Trump presidency. Is this a good time to invest in safe haven assets such as property and gold? Or, with the right strategy, is there money to be made in the equities and bonds markets?
